Had the great pleasure of capturing the performances at the
WeSMA Onam function last night here in Sydney. Onam is considered the "state festival" of Kerala, and is definitely one of the largest. It was awesome watching traditional performances from my own culture, both traditional and the more modern interpretations. :)
It was a great night, with a massive turnout! Hats off to those who performed, all from the little kids to the "big kids" :P. They did a great job. :)

The night was opened by Divya Binoy and Joseph Kalarickal. :)
And an opening performance by a few young dance students. A powerful start to the night! :D
Followed up by a great solo performance by Aleena. :)
At such a young age, it's really admirable to see them perform so well! :D
The dance was followed up by a great performance of "Chinna Chinna Aasai" by Nikki.
A solo performance by Angeleena. Such an amazing voice!
Another dance by the kids, followed by a solo song performance by Jesna.
A performance by the "Young Blood of WeSMA".. The same one as last year.. Until Lijo Dennis stepped in and told them to spice things up a bit. :P
The men behind the scenes, managing the sound and lights of the night. Lijo Dennis, James Chacko and Binoy Joseph.
A hilarious performance by the kids! :D
The skit was followed by another solo song performance, by Renji Sebin, and then an amazing Bharathanatyam performance!
Such skill and grace! Was a breath-taking performance to watch. :)
A solo performance by Nikhil Kottaram!
Had a quick look around, and realised the massive turnout behind me. :P
Caught in mid-air! :)
A solo performance by Mini Vincent. :)
A powerful dance performance by the kids, followed by a duet by Lijo Dennis and Neelu George. :)
Welcoming the Maveli (King) with chenda melam.
The sound of my culture. :D
A standing ovation for the amazing performers. :D Keeping the culture alive. :)
A emotionally powerful dance performance/story of a mother-child relationship! This was beautifully done, and very thought provoking.
Introduced by Jacob Thomas, our chief guest, Susai Benjamin, spoke a few words and showed appreciation to our Malayalam teachers for their efforts. :)
An amazing dance performance by Joshila Jose and Nikhil Kottaram!
One of the most emotional drama productions I've seen on a small stage! A mix of both great acting and video, with neat set changes! Great story and screen play by Lijo chetai! :)
A great dance performance by Jaya, Jasmine, Jaina and Simone!
Another awesome duet by Rajan Chandy and Aleena. :)
And a cool dance to finish off the performances for the night! :D
James Joseph gave a word of thanks. He and Biju George awarded the various prizes of the night.
And the night ended off with giving all the kids who participated a well-deserved round of applause. :) (and of course, lots of food! :P)
Hope you've enjoyed these photos, and wish you all a very happy Onam. :)
